Born in New York City to wealthy parents, Edith spent much of her youth in Europe. Forbidden to read novels until she was married, she made up for lost time by writing fifteen novels, seven novellas and eighty-five short stories, as well as much nonfiction including Italian Villas and their Gardens, which was an essay in landscape architecture.
