Will James
(1892 - 1942)
Cowboy legend Will James (June 6, 1892 - September 3, 1942) had quite a knack for spinning a tale–he wrote and illustrated more than 20 books and numerous magazine articles from 1920 to 1942. That is, after doing time in the Nevada State Prison in Carson City for rustling cattle in Ely.
James was awarded the Newbery Medal by the American Library Association for Smoky in 1927. The medal is awarded annually “to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children,” and is one of the highest literary honors awarded in the United States. Will James, famed author and illustrator, married a Reno gal and made his home in Washoe Valley.
