Maurice R. Robinson founded Scholastic, Inc. in 1920. He was editor of The St. Nicholas Magazine in the 1930's.

This was the first periodical publication of this story about the noble history of the Donkey. It was published in the December 1931 issue of The St. Nicholas Magazine, Volume LIX, No. 2, page 59. The book publication which included several other stories, was illustrated by James MacDonald.
